The 1st General Assembly

ACheS held it’s first General Assembly for this school year last July 9, 2004 at the Loyola Heights Condominium Rooftop. The event, which is held yearly, wasn’t a formal Assembly – it is, by ACheS tradition, an acquaintance party. Compared to the previous years, this time the first GA was packed with people! Because ACheS obtained about more than 60 new members, bringing the total number of members to above 120.

A prayer from ACheS EVP Junie Tapales kicked off this year’s party. She then turned over the mike (and the catwalk!) to hosts Peter and Paula. What followed was a round of speeches from Dr. Guidote and ACheS president Margareth Maguad (Quotable quote: “Tonight, we party!” – Dr. Guidote), then the introduction and induction of this year’s Executive Board.

Our hosts then began doling out the fun and laughs when they rolled out the rules for the games to be played. First was the Calamansi Relay, where teams had to make a calamansi pass up and down through their clothing. The next was the Talong and Kamatis game, wherein one person tries to push a tomato on the floor using an eggplant tied to their waist. Hilarious watching, it was, as everyone, including teachers, competed for prizes and enjoyment.

Dinner followed, catered as it was by ACheS VP-Special Projects Abbey Weston. While the members were eating, they were serenaded by songs from the freshmen, Aleli Gimena and James Araneta, with James and JR Ronquillo playing the guitar and Adrian Lee on the flute. After that was a dance performance by the sophomores, after which the dance floor was opened.

Ateneo Chemical Society holds Orientation for Incoming Chemistry Majors

Last June 23, The Ateneo Chemical Society held it’s yearly Freshman Orientation Seminar for incoming BS Chemistry, BS Chemistry-Materials Science Engineering, BS Chemistry-Applied Computer Studies (formerly Chemistry-Computer Engineering), and BS-MS Chemistry freshmen at 4:30 pm at CTC 105.

The freshman orientation was held for the freshmen to get to know more of the society. They were introduced to the Society’s Executive Board for this school year, led by President Margareth Maguad (3 BS ChMSE) and to the Society’s moderator, Dr. Armando Guidote, who gave a short message to the assembled students, both freshmen and upperclassmen. This was followed by a round of introductions, first from the freshmen then from the upperclassmen who attended the event.

The highlight of the afternoon was the announcement of who the freshmen would have as their buddies. A buddy is an upperclassman assigned to help an incoming Chem major adjust to life in the Ateneo system – sort of a complement to the INTACT. Buddies are there to support and to help their freshmen counterparts academically, socially or otherwise. A list of freshmen-upperclassmen buddy pairs will be posted here at Absolute-Zero soon.

The event was well attended, with about 50 or more combined freshmen and upperclassmen gracing the event. After the buddy announcements, the group broke up into their respective buddy pairs for them to get a feel for one another. This was followed by a couple of games designed to induce camaraderie among the buddies, and between all those who attended. Food and drinks were served. The event lasted until about 6:00 pm.
